HIKING IN SPAIN - THE SPANISH PYRENEES
Aiguestortes, Girona, Costa Brava, Catalonia, Spain

Girona, one of the four Catalonian provinces in northeastern Spain, stretches along the eastern end of the Pyrenees to the well known beach of Costa Brava on the Mediterranean. Northern Girona's beautiful scenery is a fantastic collage of rocky shores, long open beaches, wide fertile valleys, narrow gorges, white cliffs, beech and oak forests, and dormant volcanoes. Girona's cultural sights are every bit as diverse as the scenery: tiny country churches and old monasteries (mostly 10-12th century), huge stone farmhouses, medieval villages, lively small cities, quaint seaside towns, and the Salvador Dali museum. In spite of the unique blend of culture and scenery waiting to be discovered, few travelers venture inland from Girona's beaches and Dali attractions. Our trip concentrates on that relatively unknown part of northern Girona, walking shady forest roads and sunny paths across meadows, discovering something new at every curve in our path. At the end of the trip we have the opportunity to visit the Dali museum, enjoy the view from a ruined monastery perched high above the sea, and stroll along the alleys of one of Girona's prettiest coastal towns. Girona is also the name of the capital of the province, a beautiful medieval city with a superb old town, one of the most important ancient Jewish center in the world.

Itinerary: Our trip begins in the Mediterranean city of Barcelona, where we'll meet after taking an evening flight the night before from the U.S. We will transfer to Girona about noon and then spend the next days exploring medieval towns, tiny villages, dormant volcanoes, beach and oak forests and the Pyrenees mountains as we hike about 4 to 6 hours a day.  Towards the end of the trip we'll transfer to Figueres and Cadaques where we'll visit the world-renowned Dali museum and Dali's house. We'll spend our last 2 nights in Barcelona. E-mail us for a daily itinerary.

Our accommodations: We'll primarily stay in family run inns in the small towns, warm refuges on the mountains and modern hotels in the larger cities.
